At 17, Charlie lied about his age and enlisted on 26 Mar 1862 as a private in Company G, 1 Regiment, Connecticut Heavy Artillery for three years, so his father would not have to go. He saw active fighting, participating in the seige of Yorktowm, Hanover Court House, Seven Days Fight and Malvern Hill. He was discharged 15 Aug 1862 at Camden Street General Hospital, Baltimore MD, where he had been since 3 Jul 1862 for treatment for gunshot wound and typhoid fever. He worked at a store in New Haven with Bill Fowler, who introduced Charlie to his sister Grace.
