1952-01-07 1 Merl Alexander Beach Jr killed in Korea |
Al Beach and many other GIs were killed in Korea when Gen MacArthur foolishly antagonized China -- the worst US military defeat in the 20th century. This is Al's photo from his entry in the 1941 Bayside HS yearbook, accompanied by his address, 302 Warwick Avenue, Douglaston, and: . 'From the errors of others, a wise man corrects his own' . Merl Alexander Beach Jr was born 19 Nov 1921, likely in Harrisburg PA. He was a member of the 187th Airborne Infantry in World War II and jumped into Normandy on D-Day and later into Holland. Andrea compiled an 11-page summary of Al's life using Ancestry and other sources, in which she noted: It would appear that he had some of his high school in Harrisburg, then came to Douglaston, despite one bio saying he graduated from Harrisburg. He was born in 1921, but was in the class of 1941 – Dad was class of ’40, and born 1923 – but he skipped two grades. [Dad would have been only one year behind at the start, May vs Nov.] Al was in Diane & Pete's wedding -- see photo 1947-06-22. |
