Mom brought us to New Hampshire, fleeing polio in Massachusetts. When she heard it was in NH as well, she brought us back. The Salk vaccine came out in 1955. . This was a stressful time for Mom. It was all back roads to Weare in those days, and she took us up there alone. We were squabbling in the back seat, as usual ... eventually, Mom stopped the car, pulled me out, pulled down my pants, and spanked me by the side of the road. I expect Dan got the same, but I was only aware of my own mysery. This seemed to be a turning point - I don't think she ever had to spank me again. . -- Pete Jr |
