| Numerous Tennesseans volunteered to defend New Orleans and helped to defeat the British there at the end of the War of 1812. Thus it's known as the Volunteer State. With the University of Tennessee (U.T.) close by, a large part of the people I met wore orange shirts with white Vols lettering. |
