Neyland Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in North America, is named for General Robert Neyland (1892-1962), the football coach who, in his 21 years at U.T., led the Vols through nine undefeated seasons and brought the Vols a national championship in 1951. Coach Neyland was known both for his rigourous practice sessions, most of which took place on a dirt field here beside the river, and his football theories or maxims, some of which are listed below. There are more ways to score on defense than on offense. A quitter never wins and a winner never quits. One good blocker is worth three ball-carrying stars. A team that won't be beat can't be beat. The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins. Go out to fight and keep it up all afternoon. Football is battle. Let none escape. Eleven men in every play. |
