In 1864 Rodin met Rose Beuret (French, 1844-1917), a seamstress who became his studio helper, the mother of his son Auguste-Eugene, and his lifelong companion - despite the artist's inability to remain faithful to her. The enigmatic title of this portrait of Beuret may refer to an 1866 opera of the same name by French composer Ambrose Thomas, which featured a spirited, jealous lover. |
