2023-05-08 175 The Lost Pleiad (~1874-82, marble); Randolph Rogers, Philadelphia Museum of Art |
This sculpture represents Merope, who in Greek legend is one of seven sister stars forming the Pleiades constellation. Her brightness dimmed by the shame of marrying a mortal, Merope anxiously searches through the night sky to be reunited with her sisters. Regarded as Randolph Rogers's last great work, "The Lost Pleiad" exemplifies his flair for dynamic compositions and successfully evokes weightless flight in a freestanding sculpture. |
