Determined to suggest the sound of her voice and the emotions it evoked, Eakins asked his friend, soprano Weda Cook, to pose for hours while repeatedly singing the same few notes from "O Rest in the Lord" by Felix Mendelddohn. Upon the painting's completion, Eakins had these notes carved into its frame. |
