Marcello (Duchesse de Castiglione-Colonna, born Adele d'Affrey), 1836-1879. . In this statue of Pythia, the high priestess at the Greek Temple of Apollo in Delphi (the Oracle of Delphi), popular female sculptor Marcello captures the mythical seer's trance-like state. The artist identified so closely with Pythia, known for her powerful prophecies, that she used her own neck, shoulders, and breasts as models for the figure. . The 1870 Paris Salon included a full-sized version of this statue. That one was later installed in the central staircase of the Paris Opera, where it remains today. |
