Painted in Morisot's sitting room, shortly before her death from influenza at age 54. this portrait of Marcelle - a girl from Morisot's neighborhood - demonstrates the confidence of the artist's brush. Note the vibrant swirls of paint that make up the child's green coat. . In 1896 Morisot's family and friends organized a memorial exhibition that included this painting and nearly four hundred others. Younger artists such as Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard likely attended this tribute to one of the founders of Impressionism. Their own portraits and domestic scenes (on view nearby) contain echoes of Morisot in their intimacy and lively brushwork.
