"The Fate of a Treasure Town," by Howard Pyle, in Harper's Monthly Magazine, December 1905. . In this story, pirates invaded the wealthy Columbian city of Cartagena and seized its citizens' property. When Pyle's illustrations for it appeared in 1905, they were, according to one biographer, "the sensation of the magazine world... marvelously rich in color... dramatically stirring, and vividly romantic." |
