Sloan painted the Corn Dance as he experienced it-from the periphery. A White artist who lived in Santa Fe for part of each year, Sloan befriended Pueblo artists and promoted their work. He was dismayed by busloads of tourists visiting the pueblos. Yet Sloan remained a spectator to the ceremony he recorded, as indicated by his framing of the scene. |
