213 Golf Club Road We purchased our land on Islesboro in 1985. Chris Glass of Camden designed our house and Wallace and Gilbert Leach built it over the winter of 1985-86. The early landscaping and gardens were done by us with help from Steve Miller and others on the island. Julia Olson and her crew have been steady helpers with the gardens for many years. Besides being wonderful to work with, they always bring fresh ideas with a focus on native plants and natural settings. Our woodland path consists mainly of native, shade-loving plants. Their plant sources include Fernwood Gardens in Montville, especially for the native, woodland plants. Moose Crossing in Waldoboro is another favorite, as are Seasons Downeast and Green Thumb in Rockport. Julia and her team seem never to run out of ideas. Over the past several years, we have experimented with allowing more of our grass to become meadow and to spread over a larger area. With less lawn to mow, it's easily done with our environmentally friendly electric lawn mower. We have also added white river birch trees and more shrubs to nurture the birds and the bees. Every summer we hang two Black-Eyed Susan Fuchsias on the side porch. When installed, we often see humming birds arrive within hours. On the west side of the property, facing Gilkey Harbor, there is a quiet sitting area......aptly named "Sunset Point." Audrey Senior |
