Distraught over the death of his older sister, Rodin briefly entered a monastery in 1862-63, during which time he made this portrait of Father Pierre-Julien Eymard (French, 1811-1868), the founder of the Society of the Blessed Sacrament. The pronounced bone structure and hollows of Eymards's face, as well as his horn-like locks of hair, suggest some of the young sculptor's expressive potential. |
