Rodin made many hand studies in the 1880s in preparation for his monument "The Burghers of Calais" (installed in the museum garden). Camille Claudel, who was hired to assist him on the project, may be responsible for some of them. The art critic Mathias Morhardt recalled that "Rodin entrusted her [Claudel] with the task of modeling ther hands and feet of many of his figures ... some elegant and slender, others knotted and tense." |
