Sun slowly burns through the fog as the smoke from trains merges with the heavy clouds above. This view of Cannon Street Bridge in one of only a few paintings Tanner made in London, although he visited the city several times.

Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the FIne Arts in Philadelphia, Tanner moved abroad in his thirties. In European cities like London and Paris (where the painter lived most of his life) African Americans often enjoyed social and artistic freedoms that they were denied in the United States. In Paris, Tanner's works won recognition and were acquired by museums.
