A masterful study of sunlight and reflection, this painting appeared in the Paris Salon in 1903. It caught the eye of artist Alexander Harrison (whose work hangs nearby), who purchased it on behalf of the museum a year later. . Sorolla was born in Valencia, on the eastern coast of Spain, but he enjoyed international success and critical acclaim, especially in Paris. Valencia remained his home, however, and he painted the majority of his beach scenes there. |
