This painting was purchased in 1916 with a forged Pyle signature. It remained in a private collection until 2021. Research revealed the painting to be the work of Herman Methfessel, and the work was donated to the Museum. . In 2022, a professional conservator was able to remove the spurious signature and other overpaint from the canvas, revealing Methfessel's depiction of Michelangelo making a snow sculpture. |
