"The Prologue of the American Revolution" by Justin H. Smith, in Century Magazine, Feb. 1903. . Despite the signature, this is the work of Denman Fink, whose signature remains hidden by the forged "H. Pyle" at lower right. The painting was sold, along with several authentic Pyle drawings, to the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts-the organization which would become the Delaware Art Museum-in 1919.
Within a year, the forgery was discovered when researcher Willard Morse recognized the image, published with Fink's original signature, while combing through old issues of Century Magazine.
